This is a pretty cool review from Mattie at Oregon Surf Shop.

Just to note before anyone gets the idea I'm just shamelessly plugging a new video to sell it, anyone that knows me even remotely well will tell you that I am NOT a longboarder by any means. In fact, most of my close friends would describe me as the anti-longboard, even though you'll find me at most of the longboard contests around the Pacific Northwest. The anti-longboard side of me especially comes out when I'm forced to watch most longboard films. Anyone around the shop can tell you a list of reasons why I can't stand "The Present".

That being said, the mostly-longboard video Picaresque has rocketed itself to one of my favorite videos of recent times. While it's not qutie as jaw dropping as Days of the Strange, and it doesn't make you want to go travel to indo because you saw some pro get barreled and do an air in the same wave, it does entertain. It even made me sort of want to grab a classic longboard and slide away! Almost.

It is however an extremely well done longboard/fish video, with a killer soundtrack and awesome ciminatography. The soundtrack really does put this movie in a class of its own. Unlike most of the recent popular longboard videos, this one doesn't make you feel like you're stuck in an endless elevator with Alex Knost and a quiver of unridable heavy boards to be used on miniature waves. This film also seems to do a good job of leaving the hipster vibe out of the mix, something that has been proven hard to do lately. And to top off the good things about this film, there is NO narration, whatsoever!

All in all, what I'm trying to say is this shortboarder gives a 5 star rating to a video I would never have watched unless it had been thrown in the shop dvd player.

This must have been the longest day of my life. Up at 6am to surf Chiba, on the road to Tokyo to run around the city all day, then to our good friend Luli's club Le Baron De Paris to show the film. And, of course some live music from BLORR.

Goodbye Florida, Hello Everywhere Else!

The wind was blowing bums right off their tucus, and the sky was the
face of your girlfriend right before she is about to cry.. you know
what face I am talking about. Every girl has one and every guy
cringes at the thought of that face... the face that comes right
before you know the dam of tears is going to break and all that can
ensue is endless pats on the back, apologies, and countless
promises... It was Monday morning in Jacksonville Beach and the
weather was either angry at us for leaving or tellin us to get the
heck out of dodge. As we loaded in our duffle bags filled with half
clean/ half dirty clothes, toiletries and all the other things we
thought we would need to last us over a month of traveling, that levy
between here and the clouds broke. But we managed and though dripping
wet and shoes soaked, we set off on our first real tour! If Jax
Beach was our lady.. we left her weeping, cursing, and throwing
stilettos at our heads.

Our voyages ahead will bring us all the way up the East coast up to
New York, over to Chicago, through New England and most unbelievably..
JAPAN!!! (insert a couple "hell ya's" a few "Ya BLORR's" and one or
two "Ahhh guys I'm so happy for you's) But first, South Carolina...
Charleston to be exact. The venue was an old theatre. In fact, the
way it was decorated and furnished,, it was almost a time warp when
you walked in. Red velvet draped walls and old posters. A healthy
pack of Charleston surf enthusiasts ranging widely in age filled the
small screening. All very excited about the quality of Picaresque,
they stuck around to see what the weirdos in the giant Nike van were
there for. It was a lil ummm awkward playing for a seated audience
and because of a lack of electrical capabilities BLORR played a
stripped down Guitar/drums/crooning set. But it was very cool to play
in front of the giant pulled curtains and under the dim theatre
lighting. Felt as though we should have been wearing suits and
playing cool jazz to ladies smoking long stemmed cigarettes... Our
crowd loosened up a little and I do believe I saw excessive finger
tapping and panicky gobstopper popping by the of our of the set.

It is tough to compare these stops on this tour, being that every town has its own little flavor to offer... But that said, it is gosh darn sweet as pie to come home and play for all your wide eyed, smiling, gorgeous friends. Landshark was the host to our Wednesday night premiere. Filled with flats-screens on every wall and a house system that boomed the Picaresque soundtrack (which deserves its own WOW volume 9 commercial its so darn infectious) into the bodies of the eager audience.

An audience that was sprinkled sweetly with all the top dogs in Jacksonville... from Red Bull head honcho Ryan King perfecting the Wazzy shuffle, to Asher Nolan and Jay Dodson boogying down and of course decked out in the latest Jagmania Apparel. Poolt, Mikey and Crego from Jax's top surf communtiy sites GHive and SurfJaxPier all came out to be a part of the activities as well... That along with young shredders and too many of our amazing friends to count made Landshark a vortex frothing with sleazy, sassy energy hypnotizing all who came too close.
I do believe during BLORR's ecstatic set I saw our film-maker Mikey Detemple pull off a one-handed cartwheel over Styxxx, the Sultan of Sleaze as we like to call him... and if you've seen the bamboo chutes for legs on Styxxx, you know that's one high mark to clear. After Wednesday night it is a safe assessment that surfer dudes and dudettes alike really like to dance... Love to Dance!!! The lovely crowd cheering for an Encore til BLORR had no choice but to whip up some more B.S.R.R. was PROOF in the rice pudding.. whaaaa Ewwww. But really it was.... (oh and for those of ya not AIM savvy.. B.S.R.R. = Booty Shaking Rock n Roll motha truckerrssss)

Not really knowing anyone in the area, I was having a hard time finding a venue- But a friend named Austin helped me out and recommended this place. Pretty excited! Across the state we headed, piled in the Nike 6.0 tour mobile turning
heads everywhere we went, sometimes pretending that it was us and not
the sleek 6.0 Swoosh machine that rumbles with enough diesel power to
make Tim the Toolman Taylor get a half chub..

Friday night was Bradenton... After a late start we made it to
"Tequila Beach" to a mixed crowd of veteran drinkers and younger bar
hoppers... It is safe to say this may not have been "our crowd", but
thankfully there is substance behind this tour that pulls in even the
unexpecting dames and dudes. There is no denying the quality of
Picaresque as a sensory film period. A person that has never stepped
foot in the ocean will be wooed by the dreamy visuals captured
intimately by the 16mm film the movie was shot in. And with the
soundtrack as groovy as any compilation out--- game over Brosquitos!

And even those manly men that had puzzled looks on their face after
figuring out the luscious legs prancing around stage belonged to a man
name Tootsie couldn't help but hitting that cymbal that Hot Damm held
over the crowd during tunes like "Sweet but a lil Sassy" and "My
Terrific Tushhh". All while Cookie Sugahips sang songs of love and
sleaze, rarely breaking eye contact with Tampa's darling playboy
Dustin Howard (who had a huge hand in putting these west coast stops
together)

Saturday night's BLORRgasms were to be had at Daiquiri Deck in Mediera
Beach. Energized by a day of fierce volleyball matches -insert
story..(so we pulled up in the Giant Swoosh, thundering like Jerm's
belly after a plate of chimichangas and margaritas,,, thinking we were
gonna take over the sandy courts..... only to get owned by middle aged
men and women half of which wearing knee braces hydrating only with
Busch Light.) Wait where was I... oh right... so Saturday night was
here, and our panties were as moist (excitement was as thick) as the
humid air! We were all ready to be movin and shakin with our loved
ones from IRB. Cougars were on the prizowllll, no one safe from them
sneakin round every corner comin at ya this way and that... Thanks to
Mikey DeTemple's stand up comedy intros and an enthusiastic sound and
light guy by the name of Glenn an extra sweaty show ensued with all
sorts of strobing lights flashing off the glimmering silk dashiki that
danced around Cookie's body. All while Hot Damm and Tootsie danced
and teased those cougars with no remorse... After a few kind police
men lent us some jumper cables to start our van we were on our way...
Tampa may never be the same..

Our great friends, talented and sexy musicians Bastard Lovechild of Rock n Roll joined us for the rest of our tour the other night. We kicked off our first stop together at a bar in Ft Lauderdale, Florida called Automatic Slims. A bar notorious for scantily clad bar dancing sweethearts and dude hair so hard it cuts straight through the Virginia Slim cigarette smoke that fills the air. Little did they know that a group of surfers, skaters and tattooed hooligans fueled by waves of stoke were about to transform this place into a chapel of higher learning. A school of artistic vision and a time-transcending surf style courtesy of Mikey De Temple’s “Picaresque.” And what would this be without some after school activities? Enter Bastard Lovechild of Rock n Roll leading by example in the ways of booty shakin rock n roll!

A very special thanks goes out to Marcos Smith and Redbull for making this event happen!

And....don't worry west-sliders, were coming to CA in July. Just working on finishing up the dates!

Trik Flix Film Festival

Had a showing the other night at the Abacoa Town Center in Jupiter. It was a really cool event, a film festival for kids 19 and younger. There were a few cool submissions that were really neat. Pretty great to see the younger guys putting some shorts together. Definitely a cool event!

Another awesome show at local Burrito Stand/Outdoor movie theatre Da Kine Diego's! Best Burritos in town and such a killer setup to show a little film on the grass. Da Kine's really had the music pumping for the 150+ people that lined their blankets and lawn chairs around the screen.

We showed the film last night under the stars in The Surf Station parking lot. It was a beautiful crisp clear evening with an awesome turnout, as it should have been- This is Dustin's home town! The Surf Station is such a cool shop and owner Tory Strange is a great logger so he really appreciated this project. Thanks again to Shelly, Chris and Tory for making such an awesome event happen!! First Coast Film Festival @ Cafe11!

Picaresque was an official selection in the First Coast film Festival this past weekend at an awesome little venue in Saint Augustine called Cafe 11. They have unreal food and a great vibe. It showed with a few shorts followed by a funny little Q&A with Dustin and I. Dustin told the story where I asked him to make a film with me and how I said I had never made a film before and didn't have any money. Thanks to Josh Bolton for putting on such an awesome event and to Cafe 11 for hosting it! See everyone in Saint Augustine again this Friday night at the Surf Station! Be there!

Amazing weekend. So happy with how many people showed up to the Surfside playhouse in Cocoa Beach Friday night. People were taking the furniture out of the lobby and lining the aisles with chairs, couches and whatever else they could get their hands on. Pretty neat. What an amazing way to kick this project off to the world. Our first premier sold out the Noosa 5 Cinemas filling all 310 seats in the theatre, and then some. People packed in for for what seemed like an hour before the crowd thinned enough to actually start the show. By that time it was standing room only. I want to give a huge thanks to all my friends and their family who came out to support the film. What a night.

Noosa Festival management today announced a second movie showing at Noosa 5 Cinemas, following the sellout of the world premiere of “Searching for Michael Peterson”.

The second showing of “MP” will be a double bill with exciting new movie “Picaresque” which features Noosa’s Harrison Roach in some of the most exciting noseriding you’ll ever see.

US longboarder Mikey DeTemple and friends just shot the last frames in excellent surf in Costa Rica and the final cut is being rushed to Noosa for its first viewing on Tuesday, March 17 at 7.30pm.

Now that the dust has literally settled from our Costa Rica trip and the 30+ rolls of super-16 is back and logged I had some time to get some photo's that I took developed. I shot these with an old medium format twin-lens Yashica camera. I'm really appreciating film these days. I'm a total technology dork. I new Nikon D series camera comes out, I want it. New macbook pro just released? I'm already in line. This whole project has made me take a step back and look into the beauty of things, especially film. The natural texture, the colors and the fact that I did nothing to these photos after I scanned them is amazing.

A big part of this trip was to bring the re-shape of the "pawn shop special" into the water. We really had a vision of passing it around at a really fun beachy. Just catching a few a waves, passing it on to the next guy and so on. Just a rotation of fun- if it even worked...
Well, Chris did a pretty fine job. I think it's safe to say that it was the most fun had on the trip.
If you haven't been following along, the black stubby was a 7-something 1968-ish Hobie transitional that went like doggy dung.

The wind never stopped. Out of pure frustration I was willing to do anything. We packed our hotel room as if we were making the trek back to San Jose. I made a call to the ever elusive Joe Walsh at Witch's Rock Surf Camp. I've never met Joe, only talked to him and emailed him. Notes from him have even been left at the hotel, but never a face to face meeting. We're calling him Charlie now, and we're his angels that he sends on missions. I was planning on driving strait to Hermosa and posting up for the remaining 3 days. Charlie said we should have a look at a beach midway there and two hours out of the way. I was skeptical but figured what the heck? It can't get much worse, right? After 3 hours off the beaten path the ocean was still not in sight. The wind was honking still and the frustration in the van that we dubbed "the white rhino" was felt throughout.
Another hour later we made it- Not before charging the white rhino through a river. We made it. This is where the fun of a surf trip comes in. An empty lineup with not a person in sight. Perfect A-frames lined the black sand beach. It was all ours.

Blowin a gale.

Last night it felt as if our roof was going to blow off. 35 knot offshores with gusts exceeding 55 knots. Trees were down, power and phone lines out, tin and palm roofs gone and completely unsurfable waves. Small cars, cows and perros were mixing with the dust storm blowing down the street. The locals are saying this is strongest wind in over 4 years... Hope it dies- the forecast isn't looking promising.

Well, here we are- our last trip for Picaresque. Our first day in Costa Rica went like this: 7 hour drive North from San Jose, a roof rack breaking, an hour drive down a dirt road that lead to nothing but a flowing river and a few chupacabra's of the night. We made it to our destination in the north in the late hours of the night. The next morning we were all itching to get the airplane funk and our 7 hour van ride off of us. Here's a little sample of the first day's gold. Peeling offshore perfection.

So, we met this guy Lenny at the local pawn shop in San Clemente. We scored a pretty nice 1969 vintage Hobie transitional from him. Pretty sketchy character, but the board was a hell of a deal!

Just a quarter mile down the beach the ASP was crowning the 2008 world champion of 9-foot shortboarding, while we ran up the beach to try and get away from the circus. Finding waves isn't too hard in California. It's more about trying to find a wave without 20 other people on it. We managed to find a little more then a peak to ourselves and scored some late afternoon California gold.

I got an email from, who I can almost call- our, "staff photographer" Keith Novocel. He said there's this kid from New Jersey that we should shoot. His name is Rob Kuliesk. I had never formally met him, nor seen him surf but was eager to welcome him aboard this trip. From what I knew about him, he was a cool kid. Rode logs, shot photo's and has a solid record collection.

But none of that really matters. There's tons of kids out there that are on this program. Their in bands, they shoot photos, they make stuff and drive van's stuffed with their entire 10 board quiver. Rob's different. He rocked up driving a 2004 mexican beetle with dinged up log strapped to the roof, a few wetsuits and an interior chuck full of camera gear. Rob's surfing was clean- simple lines and smooth. Out of the water it was much of the same. His self expression is unique. Here's some photo's that he shot on what I am now dubbing, "The Long Island 1000."

Jerry Ricciotti, who shot video on this trip brought along a Polaroid camera and some instant film. He came up with some cool images that I laid out on the floor and then shot. It's a neat little montage from the last few days of driving circles around Long Island.

This film was born in New York. I was born in New York. So, to me it was necessary to have a solid NY section to show my love for the Empire State. We started filming this project last year in Montauk. We had surf, but it was only visible in between the fog banks. Made for some cool shots, but not exactly what I was looking for. I wanted to show NY the way I saw it growing up. The days I remember of my Dad pulling into stand up tubes only yards off the beach on Central Long Island. I was just a little kid and remember it so clear. Today, was the day that I imagined. The day we had been waiting for.

Log Island.

October brought the first Nor'easter of the season. With harsh North East winds and even harsher temperatures, which dipped down to the low 40's, things had changed from the week prior. Winter was at our feet. The indian summer was over and cold front swell was pumping.

Pumping right by us. The horizon looked like a marching band, on it's merry way to somewhere warmer. Would it ever fill in or was this massive Nor'easter swell that has been ticking the buoys a myth?

Late that morning, it started to fill in. With hard offshores and a wind chill in the mid 30's it was almost hard to motivate. Until we found this little against the grain right going into one of far Rockaways jettys. Here's what we found. With a little luck, bigger swell is on the horizon. Literally.

The boys were scheduled to depart their locations on Friday to this mythical place called, "The North East." I have been ranting and raving about this place so, everyone was pretty disappointed when I called Wednesday night to say, "Cancel your flights." It was flat. Now, where these guys are from - flat means something entirely different. Were talking East Coast flat. Total different story.

For now, everyone is on hold. Waiting for me to make the call. As for me, I'm just sitting here chasing unicorns waiting for NY to look like this again...

All the film is back from France. Well, all except this roll- witch is still in France. In a trash can.

Hossegor, some of the best beach breaks in the world are to be had here. Not to mention one of the only places in the world where I would gladly live on bread and wine. The only disappointment of the trip was all the naked dudes on the beach with their 60 year old junk out while playing frisbee. All baguette jokes aside, we found the France we were looking for. Biarritz offered loggin days while the banks in Capbreton threw some tubes and wedges that we all freaked over. We were in France. It was autumn and there was no place I would rather be.

First up!

After having 1,400 feet of super-16 sitting in the fridge, shot over a month ago I decided it was time to send it out. AKA, I had the money to have it processed. This surf-film-making thing is expensive. While I was in France last week it was processed, transfered and awaited my arrival yesterday when I returned to Rhode Island. We shot this whole trip on super-16, so it was kind of nerve racking wondering what we were going to see. Pleasantly surprised, it's all I hoped for. Here's a little tease of what you will be seeing.
